Abstract

A newly developed apparatus for evaluating chemomechanical effects in wear testing is described. The device allows the specimen to be biaxially loaded by the application of (1) a normal force producing local specimen-counterface contact and (2) a tensile force producing a global stress field acting over the entire specimen. The apparatus further allows the surface charge and test environment to be controlled. Therefore, the effects of these parameters can be tested independently or in combination. Preliminary test results are presented for aluminum 1100 specimens tested against SiC counterface materials in environments of 0.1 M acetic acid and deionized water under various conditions of surface charge.
