Autoionization Resonances In Atomic Chlorine - The 3S3P5(3Po(2),1,0)Np Rydberg Series

The Cl 3s(2)3p5(2P3/2-degrees) --> 3s3p5(3P2,1,0-degrees)np (n greater-than-or-equal-to 4) autoionizing Rydberg series are studied by monitoring the partial photoionization cross section of the Cl+ 3s(2)3p4(3P(e)) ionic state between 21.75 eV and 24.75 eV. The Rydberg series converging upon the 3s-1 3P2-degrees, 3P1-degrees and 3P0-degrees ionization limits are clearly resolved, and Rydberg levels up to n = 14 are identified. The present experimental results for the Cl 3s --> np Rydberg series are compared with those of the analogous series in Ar, and with theoretical results of a non-relativistic MBPT calculation.
