Issues and concerns of adolescents with cancer

Abstract

There are approximately 7800 children diagnosed with cancer annually and it is estimated that 71% will survive into adulthood. More adolescents are surviving cancer than in years past. Literature review regarding adolescents with cancer addressed the following research questions: What are the clinical issues facing the adolescent with cancer? What are the psychosocial issues of concern to adolescents with cancer? What are the implications for nursing care of these adolescents? Most adolescents with cancer are well adjusted and meeting normal developmental tasks of adolescence. However, coping as well as changes in peer relations, risk-taking behavior, and independence are issues that affect adolescents with cancer. By understanding the adolescent's developmental, psychosocial, and clinical needs, nurses can develop appropriate interventions and support coping in the adolescent with cancer.
