Abstract

The word “Pharisee” has become virtually synonymous with the word “hypocrite.” After all, isn’t that what Jesus called them? But could it be, that the Pharisees have gotten the “bum wrap” of the centuries? We should also ask whether the vicious invective against these pious Jews may have inadvertently fed the long legacy of anti-Semitism that developed in western lands.
