Letter dated September 22, 1680 (September 12, 1680 Old Style) from Thomas Atherton to Phineas Pemberton. The letter came to Pemberton through an intermediary.

By these thou [you] may knowe [know] yt [that] I have not heard
from thee [you] since thou [you] went away from heare [here]; but
hath [has] Long Expected to have heard from thee [you] both
as to ye [the] rattes [rates] of Lether [leather] & [and] tallow; as for sending wth [with]
Tho: Lertin; [Thomas Lurting] I doe [do] not intend to send any venter [venture] wth [with] him
for I doe [do] not understand yt [that] tobackco [tobacco] will Cleare the –
Charge: for Ben: Ledbetter [Benjamin Ledbetter] tell mee [me] he bought for-
ye: [the] a pound: severall [several] hdd: [hogshead] soe [so] yt [that] doe [do] not intend to
send any thing [anything]. Ether [either] upon my owne [own] nor thy [your] accnnt [account]-
wthout [without] forther [further] order from thee [you] for I belive [believe] it will
not answar [answer] I am basely [basically?] soyled [soiled] wth [with] ye [the] suger [sugar] for I –
must [strikethrough] sell it to Lesse [less] &[and] give time; or Elsse [else]
I Cannot gett [get] it of; wch [which] I have downe [down] a: [strikethrough] boue [about] 12-
in ye [the] soot: Lesse [less/least] & [and] ye [the] worst of all yt [that] I Cannot gett [get]-
monyes [monies] to make retornes [returns] of; tallow is about 30 ^£^ [pound] y
Hundred; Lether [leather] is pitty [pretty] seasenable; [sensible] ye [the] suger [sugar] Candy-
I Can but have 10 ^£^ [pounds/pence] :a: pound for it soe [so] I have not sould [sold]
