Dr. Bethune can be seen at the right of the image, wearing a white dress and white shoes. Her hand is resting on the doorknob of the storm door on the outside of the building. She is standing on the front porch. The storm door is open, and inside can be seen the main door, which is also open. On the wall to the left of the door is a plaque that reads "Mary McLeod Bethune Foundation, 1953, 'Not for myself but for others'." The Mary McLeod Bethune Foundation has been recognized as a National Historic Site. On the front of the image is written in pink ink, "Door of foundation." On the back of the photograph is written in pink ink, "Careful; Precious." The photographer of the image is unknown.
