Description

A black and white image of the first football squad at Bethune-Cookman University. The squad is standing in a straight line, with their coach farthest to the right. They are wearing matching coats, which have a cat symbol painted on the right shoulder of the sleeve. Some of the players are wearing leather helmets in the style of the time. Many are also wearing knee pads, socks, and shoes. In the back of the image can be seen tall palm trees, as well as an unidentified building. They are posing on the site where the current-day Meigs Hall is located. Pictured from left to right: Richard Shine, Skinner Hutchinson, Norman Thomas, Harold Young, Edward Williams, Harry Alexander, Lanier Booker, Normand Spiker, Edward R. Rodriguez (Mary McLeod Bethune's foster son), Harold Headley, Preston Peterson, Lishon Bozeman, Carl Prince, "Rockie" Lennon, David Boyd, and Coach Leon C. James. The photographer of the image is unknown.
