Description

Several views of the church picnic grounds as they appeared from the mid 1950s for at least 2 more decades. The specific nature of an event in one image is unknown, but the smoke rising in the background probably signifies that the huge open grill built by the men of the congregation was in full use on this day. Typically, the men of the church grilled chicken and burgers and boiled fresh sweet corn in custom-made cookers and the ladies provided side dishes and desserts. Ice cream was a commonly offered treat at church picnics, as well, and the spacious grounds offered plenty of room for horseshoes, 3-legged races and egg throwing contests. 8x10 B&W print, scanned on Epson 10000XL at SLLC, August, 2011.
