Description

Mrs. Maria Mikler (left) seems to be cleaning chickens, perhaps in preparation for the meal for a large family gathering. Watching her work are husband, Michael Mikler, St., Anna Jakubcin (who would later marry Maria's son, Joe B. Mikler) and daughter, Elizabeth Mikler. The family is standing in front of the shed on the Mikler homestead on Mikler Road in Slavia, c. mid-1930s. Note that Mr. Mikler is titled Michael Mikler, "st" (rather than "Sr.")...the abbreviated form of the Slovak word, "starsi." This suffix was sometimes used to connote "the elder" when a gentleman did not have a son named after himself, but another YOUNGER person with the same name lived in the community. (The abbreviated suffix, "ml"...for "mladsi" would be added to the younger man's name.)
