A black and white image of Mary McLeod Bethune, Donald Bethune, Rafael Grillo, and Henry Grillo. Mary McLeod Bethune is seated in a chair, and is wearing a spotted dress, white shoes, and a pearl necklace. She has her arms wrapped around two boys. The boy to the left is Donald Bethune, her great-grandson, so is wearing a shirt and trousers, and is holding up a toy. The boy to the right is Henry Grillo, who is wearing a T-shirt and shorts, and is also holding a toy. Standing behind him with his hand on his shoulder is Rafael Grillo, who is wearing a suit and tie. They are gathered in a living room. A large unidentified machine is to their right. Behind them is a bookcase full of books, with awards on top. Hanging on the wall to the right is a certificate. On the back of the photograph is a handwritten message, "To Mother Dear: Just reminding you that the Grillos will continue your good work for many years to come. Your boys, Rafael and Henry, May 20, 1954." It is unknown who the ""mother dear"" in the message is. The stamp of photographer is also on the back of the image.
