The boy on the left is Donald Bethune, her great-grandson. The boy on the right is Henry Grillo. The man standing directly behind Mary McLeod Bethune is Rafael Grillo, and the woman to the left is Georgia McLeod, Mary McLeod Bethune's niece. The woman standing at the right is unknown. They are standing on a rug, and behind them is a bookcase with many books, and awards displayed on top. On the back of the photograph is written, "To mother dear: With the love and affection of your grateful family. Rafael and Henry Grillo, May 20, 1954." Also written on the back is, "Cousins and grandchildren." The photographer's stamp is also on the back of the photo.
