Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to design a mobile therapeutic-themed experience that will help start the healing process for victims, direct and indirect, after a mass shooting incident. This design will attempt to address the stigma around seeking traditional mental health care and try to create opportunities for victims, direct and indirect, to support another even though they may not want to seek help from a therapist. Not every victim will react to the mass shooting incident in the same way, and not every person processes their feelings and emotions in the same way. The experience is designed to create a backdrop for numerous types of therapies to happen. The experience will be divided into five areas: community connection, individual therapy, group therapy, play, and a medical clinic. There are even places for those who do not want to see traditional therapy but still want to come and connect with other victims. The story and design will center around an ocean’s tide pool. The plants and animals who live in and around a tide pool tell stories of resilience living in two extreme worlds. Also, tide pools are located on the threshold of the ocean where land meets the sea. Transitions in life and in nature are never clear or easy; this is similar to what the victims of a mass shooting incident may be feeling. The physical environment will use biophilic design patterns and strategies to create spaces that tap into our primal need to be in nature.
