Abstract

By ion-exchange of a soda-lime glass in an AgNO3-NaNO3 salt melt at a temperature of 400-degrees-C for 2 h and following annealing at a temperature of 650-degrees-C for 100 h, spherical crystalline silver particles of different sizes were produced in a glass. The particles were deformed by stretching a sample of this glass within a furnace with a maximum temperature of 620-degrees-C. Optical spectra were measured before and after deformation. Results of transmission electron microscopy are given for particle sizes as well as the size dependence of particle deformation. The diameters of the particles ranged from 10 to 100 nm within one sample. Measured optical spectra are compared with spectra calculated on the basis of Gans's theory. The dependence of particle deformation on particle size and process parameters is described by a model.
