Abstract

Imported from Disclosure: A novel mechanocatalytic oxidation process has been developed. This process allows relatively benign oxygen sources (such as air and hydrogen peroxide) to be used for the production of aldehydes and oxocarboxylic acids from mono and polyunsaturated carboxylic acids derived from plant oils. The catalysts utilized are also environmentally benign. The aldehydes produced by this method can be used to improve the low temperature properties of bio-fuels and for the production of flavorings from bio-oils. The oxocarboxylic acids produced can be utilized for electrolytic hydrogen production, precursor materials for polymers, or in the production of commodity chemicals.
