Abstract

This paper describes the design, construction, installation and operation results of the Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC) photovoltaic tracking research facility. The facility was designed to test and compare the performance of stationary and tracking flat-plate and concentrating photovoltaic systems on a side-by-side basis and to obtain insolation data on one and two-axis tracking surfaces. The solar resource data will be used to compare the relative amounts of insolation available to the various surfaces for use in system design studies and computer model validation.   The purpose of this testing is to determine the performance benefits for the various tracking system options in the southeast region of the united States. This information will enable potential users to economically evaluate alternative photovoltaic operational modes prior to implementation of large scale photovoltaic projects.
