Description

Black Americana 1895 Print of J.M. Flagg's "The temptation of St. Anthony" (Front page). In Life magazine. Illustrated with black mammy with watermelon and black devil with horns. With text at the bottom: "Caricature by J. M. Flagg on a painting by Kenyon Cox. Exhibited at the Art Student's League exhibition, 1895." "Paris '95." The back page has a variety of advertisements. Caricatures and stereotyped images of black people were featured in prints, postcards and many other items at that time.
