Abstract
This paper is based in part upon a number of letters written by Wise to W. F. Samford, of Alabama, during the decade prior to the War. The originals are in the possession of Dr. George Petrie, Professor of History and Dean of the Graduate School, Alabama Polytechnic Institute; and it was on his suggestion that the paper was written, some years ago, soon after the letters were brought to light.
