Abstract
On November 4, 1836, Major General Thomas Sidney Jesup, recent quatermaster general of the army, was appointed supreme commander in Florida. His orders carried specific instructions to campaign along the Withlacoochee River, occupy the country between this river and Tampa Bay, and establish forts at strategic points in the interior that would ensure safety for the settlers and provide regular supplies for his command.
