Abstract

John Forbes was probably, born in Scotland. He received his education at King’s College in old Aberdeen, where he passed through the ordinary course of Greek, mathematics, and philosophy, and attended lectures in divinity. The University of Aberdeen conferred on him the degree of Master of Arts in the spring of 1763; the principal and masters certifying at that time that he had “behaved with great Modesty & Discretion, was diligent in his Studies, & made very good Progress in the different Branches of Learning.” On the 16th of May, 1763, he was recommended to the bishops of the Church of England for ordination to the ministry; and was soon afterwards ordained deacon and priest.
