Description
Two Great Tastes that Taste Great Together
For decades, instructors, instructional designers, and others have used the tools and techniques of open education to improve access and affordability. The ongoing, rapid advancement of generative AI is offering a new set of affordances, creating new possibilities for innovating and improving education.
In this keynote, Dr. David Wiley will explore how the intersection of open education and generative AI might redefine the future of teaching and learning, learning materials, and instructional design. By re-conceptualizing AI tools like large language models in the context of open educational resources, educators have new opportunities to create and share both content and learning activities that are more affordable, effective, and meaningful. At the same time, generative AI brings familiar challenges, including worries about access and privacy, concerns over commercialization, and the need for transparency and ethics. Drawing on lessons from decades in the open movement, this session will consider how we can combine the participatory power of openness with the technical capabilities of generative AI to move toward a future that improves access, agency, and outcomes for all learners.
