Oral history interview of Mr. David Sodderland. Interview conducted by Sara Nazarin at the Florida Masonic Home in St. Petersburg, Florida on 11/06/2019. Interview topics include, introduction; birthplace at Sharon Hill, Pennsylvania; description of family background in the Armed; family migration from Finland (then under Russian rule); Childhood life and various sports activities; motivations for joining the Marines during the Korean War; training (boot camp); sent to Treasure Island for radar check and electronic training; description of radar man; operations of the USS Sicily; personal feelings on historical figures (Douglas MacArthur and Harry S. Truman); USS Beatty and its function; scrimmage with a Russian submarine; experience at Hong Kong; sent to Florida in towns of St. Petersburg and Tampa; life after service; final message to people considering other branches of the military; conclusion.

Collection Description

Contains logs, audio and video recordings of interviews with Central Florida's veterans as part of a history class project for the students at the University of Central Florida (UCF). The UCF Community Veterans History Project(CVHP) started in fall 2010. It collects, preserves, and makes accessible to the public the experiences of Central Florida's veterans so that future generations will better understand the realities of conflict. It is a collaborative endeavor supported by multiple departments and offices at UCF. The veterans' histories are archived and made digitally available through the UCF library and selected materials are contributed to the Veterans History Project at the Library of Congress.
