Abstract

Examining retrenchment as both an institutional process and a disciplinary concern, this article argues that communication departments must prepare for financial stress through careful planning, shared governance, and visible evidence of program quality. It distinguishes short term financial emergencies from longer term resource erosion and emphasizes that faculty should participate in decisions affecting educational policy, tenure, staffing, and program structure. The article identifies criteria often used in retrenchment reviews, including mission, quality, centrality, cost, support, demand, and duplication. It also describes how professional associations can help departments before and during review by providing disciplinary identity, evaluative standards, publications, consultants, guidelines, and strategic resources.
