Abstract
This article considers how communication education can connect classroom concepts to practical skills, career development, and workplace responsibilities. It argues that communication administrators and faculty should make clearer links between disciplinary concepts and areas such as management, training, evaluation, planning, organizational development, and human resource development. The article encourages departments to review curricula for skill development, consider career planning activities, support faculty participation in nontraditional programs, and reassess professional meetings as sites for networking and applied learning. It frames communication as a discipline with broad relevance to changing employment patterns, adult learners, and organizational needs. The article is especially relevant to communication administration, curriculum development, professional development, and the public positioning of the communication discipline.
