Abstract
An organizational perspective on business communication is presented through the membership, governance, committee work, publications, conventions, and stated purposes of a professional association devoted to business communication education and research. The article describes the association as a forum connecting academic, business, industry, and international members while supporting curriculum, research, teaching methods, company training, and outreach programs. It explains business communication as a pragmatic area concerned with written and oral communication skills, communication theory, workplace effectiveness, and instruction across business, English, speech, and related academic units. The article also notes a growing interest in theory, organizational behavior, and the effects of information technology on communication instruction. Business communication is positioned as an applied component of the communication arts and sciences with expanding relevance for teaching, research, and professional practice.
