Abstract
This article examines tenure and promotion in academic theatre during a period of tightening advancement standards in higher education. It situates theatre faculty evaluation within broader changes in faculty mobility, tenure expectations, and the growing emphasis on national reputation. The article discusses the difficulty of applying publication centered models to performance, design, technical production, and other creative work, while noting the increasing acceptance of professional recognition as evidence of merit. It reviews concerns surrounding disciplinary guidelines for theatre faculty and presents practical strategies for building credible records beyond the campus. Suggested avenues include summer production work, intensive workshops, community service, association leadership, convention participation, and careful documentation of professional activity. The article frames advancement as a shared concern for theatre education, communication administration, faculty evaluation, and long term professional development.
