Abstract

This article examines how theatre administrators can evaluate artistic work for tenure, promotion, and reappointment while treating creative practice as comparable to research and publication. It reframes the central problem from judging artistic excellence in the abstract to validating the artistic quality of individual practitioners within specific institutional contexts. The article reviews possible forms of peer review, including portfolios, production critiques, competitions, off campus work, professional memberships, and publication or display of artistic work. It also identifies limitations of each approach and emphasizes that expectations should vary by institutional mission, degree program, location, and disciplinary role. The article situates artistic evaluation within communication administration by calling for clear criteria, open faculty discussion, and systematic procedures that support fair review and continuing professional growth.
