Abstract

Concerned with curriculum planning in speech communication, this article examines how programs can prepare students for careers in public relations, corporate communication, personnel development, and training. It identifies communication theory, persuasion, interpersonal and organizational communication, message design, issue analysis, writing, and empirical research as important areas of preparation. The discussion also emphasizes instructional design, presentation skills, measurement, and organizational change for students pursuing training and development work. Attention is given to emerging communication technologies, including data retrieval systems, electronic mail, computer assisted writing, corporate information systems, and distance training. The article situates curriculum development within communication administration by urging departments, especially graduate programs, to align course offerings with changing employment opportunities, professional expectations, and technological demands.
