Abstract

Based on a hospital education and training program, this article describes how communication training can be designed for health care personnel in a complex institutional setting. It reviews the development of an education department, the identification of management and interpersonal skill needs, and the creation of regular courses, workshops, and special request training. The discussion emphasizes conditions distinctive to hospitals, including continuous staffing, rapid technological change, high message volume, medical terminology, personal liability, and the central importance of accurate oral communication in patient care. It also outlines assessment and evaluation methods such as self reports, observation, role play, videotape review, written evaluations, follow up studies, and informal feedback. The article situates communication training within adult education by contrasting pedagogy with andragogy and emphasizing learning as applied competence.
