Abstract
Theatre perspectives on communication are presented through an account of theatre as a communicative art and as a field connected to speech communication, performance, media, education, and allied disciplines. The article describes theatre production as a structured exchange of messages among playwrights, directors, actors, designers, technicians, and audiences. It emphasizes the director as a designer of communication who organizes voice, movement, space, design, timing, and audience response into a coherent performance experience. The article also situates theatre within broader communication studies by considering audience analysis, cultural expectations, media competition, and the professional preparation of theatre students. It concludes by encouraging collaboration among theatre educators, communication administrators, and related associations on curriculum, teacher preparation, certification, and shared disciplinary concerns.
