Abstract

A case study of curriculum rebuilding and departmental repositioning is presented through the example of a communication department that responded to enrollment decline, loss of program visibility, and changing university priorities. The article describes how the department strengthened its undergraduate curriculum, developed applied communication and mass communication programs, expanded internship opportunities, and rebuilt service courses for students in other academic areas. It emphasizes the importance of faculty hiring, communication skills instruction, interdepartmental linkage, and extracurricular programs such as forensics and student organizations. The article situates curriculum development as a strategy for communication administration, showing how academic programs can increase institutional relevance, attract majors, and build support across campus. It contributes to discussions of departmental survival, program administration, and communication education in periods of higher education retrenchment.
