Abstract
Focused on faculty evaluation in theatre programs, this article emphasizes the importance of clearly communicating criteria, standards, evidence, and procedures for promotion, tenure, merit pay, and annual review. It describes faculty evaluation as a process intended to improve teaching, research, creative activity, and service, while noting that unclear expectations can create distrust and conflict among faculty and administrators. The article recommends that chairpersons meet annually with faculty members to establish written expectations in teaching, research and creative work, and service, including the relative weight of each area. It also presents sample rank-based criteria from a college evaluation document and discusses multiple forms of evidence for evaluating teaching, artistic activity, research, and service. Particular attention is given to the role of external evaluation in assessing theatre production and creative work. The article frames transparent written guidelines as essential to fair and constructive faculty evaluation.
