Abstract

This article explores the interdependent relationship between department chairs and deans, emphasizing the need for mutual understanding of each other’s roles, constraints, and responsibilities. It highlights the pressures chairs face from faculty, students, and upper administration, as well as the challenges deans encounter in distributing limited resources across diverse disciplines. The article argues that productive interaction requires recognition of mutual dependence, respect for differing obligations, and consistent communication. Chairs and deans must negotiate goals that align departmental needs with institutional missions while managing scarce resources and competing demands. It concludes that cooperation grounded in goodwill, trust, and shared commitment is essential for effective leadership in academic settings.
