Abstract

This brief set of instructional materials presents four case studies designed to stimulate discussion among communication administrators. The studies pose issues without prescribing solutions and invite users to consider multiple perspectives on personnel decisions, curricular leadership, and administrative identity. The first case examines conflicting evaluations of a tenure candidate whose strong service record contrasts with limited publication and mixed administrative support. The second explores the tension between personnel standards and compassion when an instructor’s substandard performance is attributed to personal hardship. The third considers the role of a chair in balancing faculty governance with administrative judgment when deciding whether to advance a new program proposal that has not gained external support. The fourth case reflects on leadership styles by asking seminar participants to articulate the attributes of an ideal department chair. Together, these scenarios highlight the complexities of decision making, the interplay of authority and responsibility, and the ambiguous boundaries between administrative and faculty roles.
