Abstract

This article examines the vulnerability of theatre departments in higher education and the factors that contribute to program discontinuance or restructuring. It argues that departments often play a role in their own decline by failing to recognize weaknesses, respond to warning signs, or engage constructively with administrative concerns. Key indicators of trouble include declining enrollment, poor faculty retention, weak curricular vitality, budget mismanagement, and insular hiring practices. The discussion emphasizes that resentment toward administrative actions is counterproductive; instead, departments must proactively demonstrate quality through alignment with institutional goals, strong student outcomes, faculty development, and effective governance. Failure to address shortcomings can result in reduction, restructuring, or elimination, while consistent self-review and cooperative leadership are presented as strategies for long-term survival and credibility.
