    Abstract

In 1987, the Association for Communication Administration circulated guidelines for evaluating artistic performance as part of promotion and tenure decisions. The document recognized interpretation—oral and written literature in performance—as a legitimate scholarly activity alongside teaching, publication, and service. The guidelines emphasized the need for external jurors to approximate peer review standards and stressed the importance of fair, expert evaluation of an artist’s body of work.
