Abstract

This article explores strategies for creating a departmental climate that fosters professional growth and a renewed commitment to scholarship. It identifies four guiding principles for chairs: setting realistic expectations for faculty contributions, ensuring initiatives originate from within the department, beginning with projects that have high chances of success, and providing multiple options to accommodate diverse needs. The discussion emphasizes the importance of broad definitions of scholarship, including synthesis and teaching-related contributions, rather than focusing narrowly on research publication. Practical steps such as forming departmental research committees, offering incentives, rewarding achievements, and supporting small pilot projects are recommended. Flexibility is stressed, with suggestions ranging from research teams and sabbaticals to professional exchanges and collaborative projects. The article concludes that while no single strategy ensures success, these approaches provide a foundation for strengthening scholarship within academic departments.
