Abstract
This article explores how university arts programs can align with the broader mission of higher education to support state and regional economic development. It argues that while technology and research initiatives often dominate such efforts, the arts also contribute significantly through cultural impact, tourism, and community revitalization. Examples include the State University of New York at Buffalo’s involvement in downtown theatre redevelopment, the purchase and renovation of the Pfeifer Theatre, and partnerships with organizations such as Studio Arena Theatre, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Albright-Knox Gallery. These collaborations expanded educational opportunities for students while enhancing the cultural life of the region. The discussion highlights how cultural institutions generate economic benefits through audience development and tourism, suggesting that the arts can play a central role in attracting industry and fostering regional growth.
