Abstract

This article describes the Tennessee State-Wide School-College Collaborative for Educational Excellence, established in 1986 to improve the preparation of high school students entering college. The initiative created six task forces in English, mathematics, science, social studies, foreign language, and the arts, composed of secondary and postsecondary educators. Guided by the College Board’s Academic Preparation for College (Green Book) and the subject-specific “Rainbow Series,” the arts task force focused on theatre, music, dance, and visual arts. Recommendations emphasized sequential, discipline-based curricula, recognition of theatre as equal to art and music, enhanced teacher training, and competency testing. Sample high school theatre courses were outlined, balancing performance, analysis, and historical study. The project sought to improve communication between high schools and colleges, establish shared competencies, and strengthen student readiness, ultimately benefiting teachers, institutions, and communities across Tennessee.
