Abstract

This article advocates greater collaboration between theatre and telecommunication programs in higher education, emphasizing the benefits of merging skills in performance and media production. It critiques theatre curricula for focusing almost exclusively on stage performance while neglecting training for microphones and cameras, and notes that radio-television programs often overlook dramatic production. An experimental workshop at a midwestern university demonstrated the value of integrating students from theatre, radio-television, and English in producing plays for television, with positive feedback from both faculty and professionals. Building on this model, West Texas State University developed a sequence of courses in television and radio drama that engaged students across multiple disciplines, including art and music. The article concludes that such collaboration better prepares students for the job market and strengthens academic programs, despite administrative challenges in cross-departmental teaching.
