Abstract

This article uses the metaphor of a dance to explore the relationship between deans and department heads in higher education. It emphasizes that effective administration requires cooperation, trust, and recognition of shared responsibilities, with each partner adapting to the other’s style while following the broader rhythm of institutional goals. Practical advice is offered for department heads, including the importance of keeping deans informed, respecting their leadership style, and avoiding unnecessary conflict. Deans are urged to establish clear goals, communicate transparently about resources, and foster an environment of support and accountability. The discussion critiques the increasing trend toward corporate models of administration and reminds leaders that their role is fundamentally one of service. The article concludes that successful academic leadership depends on mutual respect, adaptability, and awareness of when it is time to step aside for new leadership.
