Abstract

This article discusses the use of consultants from the Association for Communication Administration in developing new academic programs. Drawing on the experience of a small liberal arts university, it outlines the process of revising a mass communication curriculum to better reflect a liberal arts orientation while preparing students for both professional entry-level positions and graduate study. The account describes how faculty sought external expertise after internal consultation proved insufficient, and how an ACA consultant provided targeted recommendations for curriculum design, faculty development, and program improvement. Benefits of the process included enhanced credibility within the institution, stronger curricular integration across media areas, and support for administrative approval and budget negotiations. The article concludes that consultants are valuable in shaping program development when departmental goals are clearly defined and preparation for the consultation is thorough, ensuring that recommendations can be effectively implemented.
