Abstract
This article summarizes perspectives from four speech communication department chairs on the challenges and strategies for academic units entering the 1990s. Topics include demonstrating departmental value within universities, maintaining theoretical rigor while addressing increasing enrollments, adapting to diverse student populations, and managing faculty resources. Additional concerns involve enhancing departmental image, inclusive governance, affirmative action efforts, and proactive student recruitment. One contributor argues that beyond administrative adjustments, the discipline must confront transformative changes in communication technology as central to its future. Collectively, these viewpoints highlight both recurring administrative issues and deeper disciplinary shifts that will shape communication departments in the coming decade.
