Abstract

This article examines how theatre programs can determine whether specialized faculty in areas such as voice, movement, technical direction, and management should hold tenure track, non tenure track, staff, or guest artist appointments. It outlines the complexities of evaluating artistic contributions and the need to define institutional and departmental missions when making such decisions. Key factors include the type and size of the institution, degree programs offered, areas of emphasis, production requirements, and standards for promotion and tenure. The discussion highlights that institutions must provide clear expectations and adequate support for creative and scholarly work if tenure track appointments are offered. Through illustrative examples, the article emphasizes that decisions should align with institutional goals and resources to ensure fair evaluation and effective faculty contributions.
