Description
At its core, Cutting Chords is a reflection on the act of letting go of someone you love.
In Hinduism, red thread is called kautuka which is used in marital ceremonies to symbolize eternal connection. In Jewish custom, it is known as Kabbalah. The Chinese have a mythological connotation, aptly titled the Red Thread of Fate. Music can serve a similar function in symbolizing the bond between two people. At least, it did for us. I combined these two methods of binding by placing the red thread in the spaces of lines of sheet music. Particularly, the music of Donna Summer’s On The Radio (which was our song). As the reader progresses through the book another line of thread gets cut. The connection is severed, the thread becomes frayed. Ultimately, all the threads are cut and the song can no longer be played. Without the red thread, the notes float without context, becoming meaningless. Without the bond, there is no more music.
