Description

Artist statement:

For this book, I was inspired by my own personal experience with dealing with my health over the years. I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease when I was fourteen years old. Crohn’s is an inflammatory bowel disease that can cause inflammation throughout your digestive system and invoke many symptoms including nausea, abdominal pain, and weight loss. There is no cure for the disease and the causes of it are unknown. It’s been about eight years since my diagnosis, and looking back on when I was first diagnosed, I don’t think I fully comprehended how my life would be forever affected by this. This piece is directly influenced by how I remember taking pride in the unique vocabulary that I was learning, as most of my friends have never even heard of a gastroenterologist before. With this piece I wanted juxtapose the medical vocabulary with the medium of a children’s book. The terms I selected for each letter reflect terms that I have come across throughout my health journey. For the illustrations, I wanted to capture the essence of each term while keeping the art style light and not too graphic. Color choices were made to uphold the children’s book aesthetic.
