Artist Statement:
Much of my childhood was spent outside, playing in our backyard. Many of my core memories revolve around the plants and trees where I lived, and now as I grow older, many of those plants and trees have gone forgotten or uncared for as we become busier and less focused on them. To show my complex feelings with nostalgia and the plants I grew up with, as well as my eagerness to move on to the next chapter in my life, I created 'A Plant Memoir' to hold a piece of my memories, now and forever.
Each page has a leaf, flower, or seeds preserved in the clear sheets, a watercolor painting I did of the plant it came from, and an associated bittersweet memory or moment from my life. The cover is held together by an old friendship bracelet I made as a child, and the book is bound in a variation of the Tortoise Shell Binding to create a leaf-like pattern along the spine.
