Artist statement:
We are often blind to the wonders that we see every day. In 'reflection', I bring a focus to our moon, who we take for granted because of its permanence in our sky. The book has been designed to be read by holding each page to a light source, revealing the lithophane that has been created in each page. Just as our moon is a reflection of the sun's light, 'reflection' is best read when the light of something else is used to illuminate it.
My work 'reflection' tells the story of my love for our moon and the celestial sky, and how it is often overlooked. Each page was digitally designed, manually height-mapped to create darker and lighter areas in each image, and printed over several weeks on a 3D printer. The pages were then embedded with small hooks, and bound into a text block using a variation of a French Stitch binding, modified for the hooks and to ensure free movement between the pages. The cover was then designed and embroidered by hand, and a magnet embedded into the front flap to secure and protect the pages.
