In 1765, the Saint Vincent Botanic Gardens were established in the West Indies and is believed to be the first botanical gardens in the Western Hemisphere. General Robert Melville, Governor of the Windward Islands, and George Young, a British military surgeon, worked together to established the gardens installing Young as the gardens’ first superintendent. This image shows a lily pond with a fountain. A man in shorts and a khaki shirt can be seen standing near the fountain. The botanical gardens have been planted with palm trees, poinsettias, bougainvilleas, and chenille plants.
