    Darkie Brand Toothpaste

    Description

    Metal sign of Darkie Toothpaste, black and white caricature image of a black male in top hat, shirt & bowtie, with green background. "Darkie" is a toothpaste brand of Hawley & Hazel Chemical Company in which African Americans were represented with exaggeration and ridicule. Established in Shanghai in 1933 and later based in Hong Kong and Taiwan, Hawley & Hazel was acquired in 1985 by the US corporation Colgate-Palmolive. The date of this sign is unknown.
