In the 1920s, the administration of the school taught the children not only academics, but also vocational training as well to prepare them for life after school. The baskets, hand brooms, and boxes are sitting in a table in the center of the image. The brooms stand next to the window along the back wall. A wicker chair and wood tables sit in front of the larger table. A sign hanging from a curved rod reads "Boys Industries." On the back of the photograph is the note, "Boy's broom making 1926." Very tall trees can be seen in the background behind the chicken coop, including palm trees. A part of the front of Faith Hall can be see through the trees behind the chicken yard. Two tall white structures are on either side of the chicken coop, and a woodbeam structure with chicken wire runs between them. The tall structure at the right of the photograph has an opening where chickens can be seen standing. A variety of chickens are seen walking around in the dirt yard. Seven African American females are seen in long-sleeved white dresses with smocks over them and white hats. One women at the left forefront of the image is carrying a bucket presumably full of seed for the chickens. Another woman is at the right of the image and is standing in the pen. The remaining four women are standing in the shade behind chicken wire. At the center of the image is Mary McLeod Bethune. She is wearing a large, floppy white hat, and light-colored dress which goes to her ankles. She is turned to the side. On the lower left-hand front of the image is the number "39", but the significance of this number is unknown. Black and white photo taken indoors of the Bethune-Cookman University early college laundry facility. The image is matted to a light-and-dark brown cardboard frame. Written in pencil on the frame is the name of the studio and location of image: "Jungle Studio, Daytona Fla." To the left of the image is a wooden door, with a window each on the left wall and a window on the far back wall. The image was taken during the day because sunlight is shining through the windows. Two industrial-style sinks, one each on the left wall and the back wall, are in this room. Each sink has multiple basins. On the left sink can be made out faucets, as well as washboards laying on the sink's workspace. The sink on the back wall also has faucets, plus a large, circular metal tub sits on this sink's workspace. A single lightbulb hangs from wire from the ceiling, and a wire runs across the celing from one wall to the other. Two wooden support beams stand in the center of the laundry room. The table nearest the door has white material folded on top of it, possibly sheets or clothes. A wicker basket sits underneath the table, also holding white material. To the right of the image are three long tables standing parallel to each other, which are covered in white material. In the middle of the image stands a circular, wooden wash basin. In this image, eight female African American students, four at each table, prepare to make nut bread. The women are standing in a classroom. At the left of the image is a closet where supplies and ingredients are kept. Also in the closet can partially be seen a Coca-Cola drink bottle cooler. Standing to the right of the closet is a teacher observing the class. She is wearing a light-colored dress. On the wall behind her are a variety of posters, a wall clock, a blackboard, and a weight scale. A sign on the blackboard reads, "Cease to be a drudge; Seek to be an artist." The directions for the class to make nut bread are written on the chalkboard. They can only partially be read, "Nut bread; 1 and 1/2 cups brown sugar; 1 and 1/2 cups sweet milk; 4 teasp. backing powder; 1 egg; 1 cup; 4 cups; Let rise 30 min., 30 or 40 minutes." The posters on the wall are on the following topics: protein, calcium, phosphorous, iron, growth, and Vitamin A. Standing at the table farthest to the left are four female students. At the end of the table nearest the chalkboard can be seen an old cash register. The four women are mixing ingredients into their own bowls, and are using old-fashioned hand-turn egg beaters to mix the ingredients. The students standing at the table at the right of the image are performing the same task with the ingredients and egg beaters.
